The Portland Enterprise (Portland, PA) 1874-1920
Portland had a newspaper, The Portland Enterprise, that was printed right in town. This weekly paper, started in 1874 by L.G. Raymond, gave the people on both sides of the river all the news. It featured the sermons of T. Dewitt Talmadge for years and other items of interest like the shooting of President Garfield in 1881, the identification of the TB germ in 1882, completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883, publication of the first Sherlock Holmes story in 1887, the Johnstown Flood in 1889, the World Fair, Paris, and 1889 where the first automobile, a Benz, was exhibited.
Coe Finch took over the paper in the 1880s and continued until John Wildrick became editor in 1900.
